Dance 301: Swing Dances

Opened

Vintage & Modern Swing
Our Swing dance class will explain how key vintage Swing dances from the 1930's and 1940's evolved into the array of dances we enjoy today.

 Lindy Hop
Fast to Faster (200 - 250BPM) tempos
6 and 8 count patterns, Syncopated triple steps
Incorporates may Charleston moves
"Lindy Hops the Atlantic" gave birth to the name
Couple moves together and back
Catching "air" - lifts and drops
Birthed at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem (30's and 40's)

West Coast Swing
Smoother and slower than Lindy (80-120BPM)
Pushes and twirls across a "slot" shape
Variety of music (Pop, R&B, Soul, Blues)
"Nightclub" tunes

East Coast Swing
Simple variation of Lindy Hop
Mostly 6 count patterns, easier styling
Great start to Swing Dancing

Jive
Lindy and Jitterbug at a slower pace (150-200 BPM)

Shag
Started in the Southern US in the 1930's
slow-slow-quick-quick form
Fast hops and kicks

The Charleston (1920's)
Formative for the Lindy Hop and Bunny Hop

Shim Sham
Choreographed Line Dance by Frankie Manning
Based upon a tap dance routine and blues moves
Staple of ALL Lindy Hoppers

Tuesday's "HIstory of Swing" show provides looks into the Swing Era from different perspectives.  Much of this show material becomes part of our 301 class.

Our 2Ldance.org SwingStream  provides over 400 Swing tunes from vintage to modern.  We have classics by Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Tommy Dorsey mods like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Brian Setzer.  Our tunes are designed specifically for Second Life and 2LDance.org-enabled venues like Creations Park's CP Swings!
